EXCLUSIVE! See Klaus and Elijah in period costume
"It’s flashback time!
The Nov. 1 episode of The Vampire Diaries gives fans a glimpse into the lives of — the apparently quite wealthy — Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah in 12th century Italy. We spoke to the series’ costume designer, Leigh Leverett, to find out how she devised the period costumes for our favorite Originals.
“I look at research from th
e period and find the best styles… that I think fit our show,” Leverett says about the three costumes she created for the episode. “We actually built all of this in our tailor shop.”
Leverett may have relied on research to inform her designs but she readily admits she took a “little bit of license with the period” when it came to creating Klaus’ ensemble.
“A lot of the pieces from that period more were tunic style, and they would fit a little bit baggier,” Leverett explained. “But I don’t think Klaus would be caught dead in a baggy thing no matter what period it is, so we tightened it up and just made it look a little more like something Klaus would have had made for himself.”
